Proudly From Sparta - Christine Scaglione
Influenced by Community Leaders
I received my Girl Scout Gold Award by hosting a Read-A-Thon at theSparta Public Library. The kids set weekly reading goals and donated books to St. Joseph Children's Hospitalin Paterson. Since many of the children who go to that hospital speak Spanish, Iworked with Donna Fell, the owner of Sparta Books, to order children's books in Spanish for the Read-A-Thon participants to purchase. Phyllis Phillips, Saint Kateri's Youth Ministry leader, inspired me to create the Pennies for Pajamas program. I hosted apajama day at Alpine and Helen Morgan schools. The money collected went to purchase pajamas for homeless children.
As a member of the Sparta High School Select Choir, I had the privilege to sing alongside professionals at Carnegie Hall. This was a great opportunity thanks tothe suport of Mrs. Lopez and the SHS Music Dept. I would like to participate in the University Choir at Penn State next Year.
Feeling Well Prepared
I am going to the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State on a 5 yr BS/MBA program, majoring in Biology. I feel well prepared for this science program in part due to the influence of my favorite teacher, Mr. Jarrell. I took Honors Physics with him my junior year and was not planning on taking AP Physics my senior year but he encouraged me to give it a shot. Mr. Jarrell could be teaching at a higher level but he has aneceptional ability tocommunicate his thoughts and ideas tohigh school students. He inspires confidence in his students.
My name is Christine Scaglione and I am proudly from Sparta.
