Posted Mon, Jan 21st, 2013 Sparta Independent

Second Graders in snowshoes

Kyle Markovich is keeping Alpine students in shape during the winter months. With the financial support of the Sparta Education Foundation, he purchased enough snowshoes for a class. They will be used in grades K through 2. This will help students meet the New Jersey Health and Physical Education Core Curriculum Content Standards, develop personal growth and development and increase their knowledge of how body parts work together to support wellness. In addition, it provides a pathway for talking to students about dressing appropriately in the winter, retaining body heat, and preventing frostbite.Markovich said, "The use of snowshoes provides a unique prospective on ways to stay active in the winter and encourages lifetime fitness."Parker Hein, a student at Helen Morgan said, "We went into the woods and we saw deer. It was fun!"The Sparta Education Foundation has sponsored over $350,000 in grants to the Sparta School District. They will be hosting their next fundraiser, Casino Night on Feb. 9 at the Lake Mohawk Country Club.K
